    This is an HSSE 3 flute plug tap with relief cuts for high speed.  This is
    Spiral Pointed
    which pushes the chips forward, out of the way of the cutting for better tapping quality (straight taps are designed to keep the chips in the flutes of the tap).
    HSSE is for "High Performance Application-Specific" tap made from M35 steel in which COBALT is added.  It will cut faster and last longer than M2 steel (which is the standard for HSS taps).
    The tap is P4 and made in Japan.  It was lightly used, it is in very good condition.  The square is 0.598".  The shank of this tap does not appear like it has ever been chucked up either in a collet or a hand tap wrench.  This is not an ordinary tap, it is made from M35 steel which is steel with Cobalt added, this is a much more expensive process.  M35 steel
    will cut faster and last longer than M2 (M2 steel is considered the common HSS (High Speed Steel) of higher quality taps and drill bits.
